Terrazzo Design Specification

This presentation will give an overview of the history of terrazzo, the various types of terrazzo and appropriate installation procedures. Attendees will appreciate the versatility of design options and green benefits of terrazzo, while gaining an understanding of the installation process, technical considerations, and special detailing. Specification “do’s and don’ts” and material and contractor qualifications will be covered.

Engineered Wood Flooring

This seminar explores the uses and benefits of engineered wood flooring. Design professionals will become more familiar with the construction and manufacturing processes of engineered wood flooring in an effort to properly specify the material for their client projects.

Fiberglass Thermal Spacer

Many North American jurisdictions are moving beyond ASHRAE performance requirements for exterior wall assemblies, shifting instead to a holistic, building energy performance standard (BEPS) approach. While this evolution offers benefits—such as design flexibility and lower operating costs—it also requires a new approach to building those assemblies.

A line-item-by-line-item approach no longer yields the best results. Instead, component performance needs to be viewed across multiple facets to build high-performance exterior wall assemblies. This presentation discusses the impacts of thermal bridging on compliance with emerging building energy performance standards (BEPS), as well as ASHRAE.

Reviewing common insulation solutions—including interior, split and exterior insulation methods—the session delves into strategies for limiting thermal bridging through various cladding attachments. Finally, a review of real-world case studies helps demonstrate the interconnectivity of component when achieving high-performance.

RAINA

This seminar provides an overview of rainscreen wall designs, including all the visible and hidden components and important factors in performance. Claddings and attachments, the air cavity and why width matters, water control, structural considerations, fire and combustibility, exterior insulation … all this and more will be touched on.

The Challenges of Installing Large-Format Porcelain Tiles

An explanation about the “calibration specifications” that are followed when porcelain tile is manufactured; how the quality, variety of sizes, and intended use of the porcelain tile can affect the installation method; and the importance of surface preparation as the size of the porcelain tile increases. The presentation also covers how the grout joint size and the mortar type used can affect the performance of a large-format porcelain tile installation; and how an installation can be influenced by curvature, thermal movement, deformability and use of expansion joints.

TCNA and ANSI: Specifying Successful Tile and Stone Systems By The Book

The TCNA (Tile Council of North America) Handbook and the ANSI A108 and A118 standard are critical resources when specifying ceramic, glass, and stone tiles. This presentation will provide an overview of both documents, their relationship to each other and how to use them more effectively. We will discuss the standards process, how new methods and standards are added to the documents and what are important new additions. With a more thorough understanding of the documents, it should make locating your specific project methods and standards much easier and project specifications more accurate.

Key to Avoiding Costly Failures

A discussion about the various types, methods and situations where waterproofing will protect and enhance tile and flooring installations. Also, a look at the various failures that can occur when waterproofing or moisture control is neglected or incorrectly installed in residential and commercial tile projects, including interior/exterior floors and walls, swimming pools, balconies, plaza decks, facades and baths.

Self-Leveling Underlayments

An in-depth introduction to the various methods of surface preparation required for installing self-leveling underlayment materials for concrete; the various industry standards of testing for moisture vapor emission rate (MVER). The presentation also will include an understanding the various types of self-leveling underlayments and potential problems for self-leveling applications and how to avoid them.
